domestic partnership: FiNAl
What do you think about when you hear the word freedom? Some may look at freedom as the right to do what you want, say what you want, and be who you want to be. But can too much freedom effect people’s daily lives? Can the choices you make with freedom change the look of society? I believe that prop 8 is negative slash at freedom. Proposition 8 eliminates rights of same sex couples to marry.
California should guarantee the same freedom and right to everyone. No one should be singled out or be treated differently just because they are different. Like many others, I believe that being gay is not a choice. Why would you choose to have society feel different about you? Regardless of how you feel about this issue we should not eliminate rights for any citizen of California. Prop 8 takes away freedom and is unfair. Freedom gives you the right to decide for yourself without the government. People should be able to marry the ones they love. They should be able to feel like a “married couple”. They should be able to spend the rest of their lives with someone even if society disagrees. Who is society to choose who the gay community loves?
During the process of Prop 8, there was an article in the newspaper of a first grade teacher taking her class on a field trip to her “domestic partnership”. Many people thought that this was a way to get children into gay marriage and to have gay marriage taught at schools. One thing people may have forgotten is that if a teacher is taking her class on a field trip, the teacher must give out a permission slip. This slip is given to the student’s parents and is either accepted or denied to go to the field trip. Therefore, if the parents didn’t want the students to go to the “domestic partnership” they would denied the permission form.
After all the voting took place 52.5% of California voted yes on Prop 8. While 47.5% of California voted no. No matter what your views are on gay marriage, whether you believe in what the bible says or not, Prop 8 is unfair. No one should be told if they can get married or not. So the next time you think about freedom, think about how easy society can take it away.
